Brooks Douglass, an attorney and former Oklahoma state senator, died on October 16, 2019, at the age of 56 from complications related to cancer. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2018, a type of cancer that affects the bone marrow.

Brooks was known for his work as a victims' rights advocate, stemming from his personal experience of surviving a violent crime. In 1979, he and his sister were shot by two men who broke into their family's home in Oklahoma. Brooks survived and went on to become a lawyer and politician, while his sister Leslie died from her injuries.

In addition to his work in politics and law, Brooks was also a filmmaker and produced a documentary titled "Heaven's Rain" based on his family's experiences. The film was released in 2011.
